Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect Prevention Tips

Protecting the rights of our elders who have been injured in nursing homes in Tennessee

If you have a family member who lives in a nursing home, you are their first line of defense from being abused or neglected. You play a vital role in making sure that your loved one gets the best care possible, but you must be proactive and take a few preventive steps to keep them safe and well cared for. When you visit frequently and unexpectedly, ask lots of questions of the staff and administration, when you stay in close contact and respectfully insist on the best quality care, your loved one will benefit.

Preventing nursing home abuse and neglect

At Bailey & Greer, we represent families in Memphis, Jackson and throughout West Tennessee whose loved ones have been abused or neglected in nursing homes, so we know how prevalent the issue is. We believe that by working together, we can help put an end to elder abuse. Your best chance at preventing your loved one from being neglected involves your active participation in his or her life. To that end:

  • Visit frequently and unexpectedly
  • Become familiar with the Tennessee Nursing Home Residents’ Bill of Rights
  • Get to know the nursing home staff and administration
  • Keep in communication with your loved one’s doctor
  • Monitor weight changes and follow-up with their doctor if they are looking thin or pale
  • Frequently review their Activities of Daily Living (ADL) chart
  • Consider installing a surveillance camera (but review nursing home regulations first)
  • Become familiar with the warning signs of abuse and neglect

What to do if you suspect neglect or abuse

Report any signs of abuse or neglect right away. Become familiar with the process for filing an official complaint with the nursing home before an incident occurs so that you will be acquainted with the process should you need to follow it.

It cannot be emphasized enough how important it is to spend time at the nursing home with your loved one. Develop a working rapport with the staff people who care for your family member and learn the names of the administrators. When you can’t be there every day to supervise their care, you want to make sure that the staff knows that your loved one has a family that cares for them and who will be around.

At Bailey & Greer we know how difficult it can be to make the decision to place your loved one in a nursing home. If you should discover that your loved one has suffered an injury at the hands of nursing home staff, we will be here to advocate for their rights and bring the responsible party to justice.
