Hit and Run Drivers Sometimes Leave Behind Incriminating Evidence

On April 20, 2014, the driver of an SUV crossed the center line of a highway in Janesville, Wisconsin, and hit two motorcycles.  Soon thereafter, the driver fled the scene of the accident. One of the young men who was struck by the hit and run driver died at the scene of the accident, while the other died at the hospital as a result of the injuries that he sustained in the accident.

Fortunately, it appears as though the driver of the SUV will be brought to justice, as a result of the actions of people who assisted authorities in locating him and the evidence that was uncovered at the scene of the accident. The two young men who were hit and killed had been riding with a group of friends, and the riders who were travelling behind them saw the crash as it happened. Those witnesses were able to provide police with an approximate description of the vehicle that had fled the scene. With a description of the suspect vehicle in hand, authorities began asking the public for help in locating the black SUV which was involved in the fatal crash.

An Illinois man saw pictures of the SUV on the news, and he realized that it was his vehicle, which his son had been using at the time that the accident occurred. The man asked his son whether he had been involved in an accident, and his son denied that anything had happened. The man knew that there was damage to the vehicle which had occurred while his son was borrowing it. The man’s SUV was damaged in the same manner that the vehicle described on the news was said to have been damaged in the accident, so the man contacted authorities and informed them that he believed that his son was the driver who had caused the accident. The son was located by authorities, and was taken into custody.

Although the man who has been arrested, Sambath Pal, has pled not guilty to the two charges of hit and run resulting in death which have been brought against him, evidence which was found at the scene of the accident may link him to the double fatality. Family and friends have already helped authorities to establish that Pal was in possession of the SUV at the time that the accident occurred. After the accident, investigators found pieces of a wheel well liner and a fog lamp assembly. Those pieces were sent to the state crime lab for analysis, and they were found to be a perfect match for the black Infiniti QX56 that Pal’s father had loaned to him. According to the Rock County detective who testified at Pal’s preliminary hearing, the crime lab has found that the parts belong to Pal’s father’s vehicle, and could not possibly belong to any other vehicle.
