Medicare’s Nursing Home Compare for Rating Nursing Homes

Personal injury attorneys serving clients injured in nursing homes in Tennessee

When the time comes for you to entrust the care of your loved one to a nursing home, choosing the best facility can be a gut-wrenching prospect. The U.S. Government has created a website called Nursing Home Compare, which gives consumers useful information about nursing homes so that you can make well-informed choices. The directory includes 15,000 skilled nursing facilities across the United States that are Medicare and Medicaid-certified.

Since 1986, the people of Memphis and Jackson, Tennessee have placed their trust in the nursing home abuse and neglect attorneys of Bailey & Greer, PLLC. We do everything in our power to assert and protect the rights of our clients and win the compensation they deserve.

Recent changes to Nursing Home Compare

In February 2015, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) made significant changes to Nursing Home Compare. The Quality Measures (QMs) have been recalibrated, it now includes antipsychotic drug use in the QM ratings, and it has adjusted the criteria for the staff ratings. The CMS has also expanded the surveys that are designed to improve the accuracy of resident assessment information.

Using Nursing Home Compare to find skilled nursing care facilities

The site provides the following information to help guide consumer decision making in selecting a nursing home:

  • Five-star quality ratings
  • Inspection results and complaints
  • Staffing information such as how many RNs, LPNs, physical therapists and nursing assistants in each facility
  • Quality measures that describe the quality of care at each facility
  • Penalties that have been levied against a facility

With the revision of the site’s rating system, there are now higher standards for many of the quality measures, changes to how staffing ratios are calculated resulting in higher standards, expanded federal oversight of state inspectors, and increased quality of federal inspections.

Making the decision about which nursing home to choose

One important factor to keep in mind is that even with all of the changes, tougher standards and more emphasis on inspections, the ratings available on Nursing Home Compare are still based on self-reported data from the nursing facilities.

You are advised to visit each facility that you are considering for your loved one, consult consumer reviews of nursing facilities such as the ones on SeniorAdvisor.com, and to use the Nursing Home Checklist and Guide to Choosing a Nursing Home found on the Nursing Home Compare site.

If your loved one has been injured as a result of nursing home abuse or neglect, the compassionate attorneys at Bailey & Greer want to meet with you. We do our best to guide our clients towards satisfying resolution to their legal problems.
