AndroGel and Testosterone Therapies Can Lead to Cardiac Arrest

Protecting the rights of victims in Memphis, Jackson and West Tennessee

AndroGel is a topical testosterone gel for men that is used to treat the lack of naturally occurring testosterone, or hypogonadism. It is manufactured by AbbVie and it was approved in 2000 by the FDA for testosterone replacement therapy for adult males. However, AndroGel and products like it have caused serious side effects in both users and the people who come into physical contact with them.

Some men have filed lawsuits against drug makers who produced and sold testosterone gel products, but failed to warn men about the life-threatening side-effects associated with the drug. At the law firm of Bailey & Greer, PLLC, our personal injury lawyers have years of experience helping our clients in Memphis, Jackson and throughout West Tennessee file claims against manufacturers whose products have caused harm. We are ready to fight for your rights to compensation for your injuries.

Why men use testosterone gels

Testosterone is a hormone that the body produces which is responsible for the development of the male sex organs, body and facial hair, sex drive and sexual function. Testosterone levels play a role in the development of strength and muscle mass, it governs where fat is distributed on the body, mood, energy levels and motivation. As a man ages, his “T levels” drop. In some cases it leads to a condition called hypogonadism, and is associated with low sex drive, low energy, fatigue, weight gain and depression.

Testosterone gel products such as AndroGel are sticky gels that are applied to the skin. The drug is taken up into the bloodstream through the skin to treat men whose testosterone levels have fallen below the 300 ng/dL range.

Dangerous side effects

What nobody told the men who take these supplements is that “Low T” is not a real thing (unlike hypogonadism, which is a real medical condition). Thousands of men have been fooled into thinking they needed a testosterone supplement when they did not, and suffered serious side effects because of it. Among the worst of those side effects are:

  • Heart attacks
  • Strokes
  • Gynecomastia
  • Prostate cancer
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • High blood pressure
  • Changes in sexual function

In the worst case scenarios, AndroGel users have died from the product. In March 2015 the FDA issued a drug safety precaution about the use of testosterone gel products about the risk of heart attack and stroke with use.

But perhaps even more tragic than people suffering from using a product they do not need is unintended effects it had on innocent bystanders. Topical testosterone gels are so strong that anyone who comes into contact with the gel can be affected. Thus, the wives and children of men who took drugs for the alleged “low T” also increased their testosterone, leading to increases in body hair and acne outbreaks, as well as changes in mood. Pregnant woman unknowingly put their unborn children at an increased risk of birth defects.

Your next steps

All of the federal lawsuits against the makers of AndroGel and several other testosterone replacement therapy gel products have been consolidated into a Multi District Lawsuit (MDL). Since all of the plaintiffs have the same complaints against the drug makers, the cases are being consolidated in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois under Judge Matthew F. Kennelly to streamline the process. Each case will be tried individually. To date, 1,300 lawsuits have been filed against 7 manufacturers.

If you or someone you care about has been injured as a result of using testosterone gel products you may be able to file a lawsuit to recover compensation for your injuries, medical bills, pain and suffering and lost income. The skilled defective drug litigators of Bailey & Greer can help you explore your options to see if filing a lawsuit is right for you and your family.
