Why Doesn’t Every Driver in Tennessee Wear a Seat Belt?

As Memphis car crash lawyers, we see the results of horrible car accidents over and over every year. But, so many of these results could be lessened if every driver was wearing his or her seatbelt when the crash occurred.

Even with this knowledge, many choose not to buckle up behind the wheel. Why? Here are some of the reasons given by people who either never wear seat belts or only occasionally use them:
  • I was in a hurry and didn’t have time to buckle up.
  • The traffic is always light on the roads I use.
  • I am heavy and seat belts just don’t fit me right.
  • I don’t want to get my clothes wrinkled.
  • I don’t like being told what to do; I can make my own mind up.
  • They don’t work. I know someone who was killed while wearing a seat belt.
  • The government needs to get out of my personal business.
  • I just never have gotten used to wearing a seat belt.
  • I have air bags; so why wear the seat belt too?
Looked at logically, these reasons all seem weak in the face of overwhelming evidence that seat belts prevent severe injury and death every day. For every excuse there is a fact that refutes it. For instance, seat belt extenders are available to overweight people. Light traffic does not reduce the chances of having to make a sudden stop. Air bags do not keep you from being ejected from the car. And, of course, evidence continues to mount linking seat belt usage to fewer Tennessee car accident deaths.

The Memphis car crash lawyers at Bailey & Greer urge you to always wear a seat belt when you drive. If the safety evidence is not enough for you, then do it because you could harm a potential lawsuit following a car accident caused by someone else.
