Memphis Medical Malpractice Attorneys Discuss Ophthalmologists and Dentists

When you hear about medical malpractice, the stories are often about things that went wrong at a hospital, or situations in which doctors failed to diagnose or misdiagnosed patients who came to their offices in search of relief from their symptoms. While the aforementioned situations certainly qualify as instances of medical malpractice, it is important for people to understand that the concept of medical malpractice also extends to other health care professionals, such as ophthalmologists and dentists. While stories about harm suffered at the hands of an eye doctor or a dentist are less common than tales of surgeries gone wrong and lethal overdoses of medication, they do happen. Here are a few examples of medical malpractice situations which involved medical professionals other than those which are found in the typical hospital or doctor’s office setting.

In North Carolina, a man is now blind in one eye because the ophthalmologist and surgeon used the wrong drug during his cataract surgery. During the surgery, the doctors were supposed to use a dye called VisionBlue to make the man’s cataract visible so that they could remove it. The nurse who was attending the surgery brought a vial of methylene blue instead of VisionBlue into the operating room, and it was given to the doctors. Through an oversight, miscommunication, or other error, the doctors applied methylene blue instead of VisionBlue to the man’s eye, causing severe damage. The doctors tried to repair the eye surgically, but to no avail. The man has completely lost vision in the damaged eye, and has developed glaucoma in the same eye.

A Georgia woman whose teeth were ruined by poorly performed dental work was able to recover against the dentist’s employer for her damages. Among other things, the dentist fitted crowns improperly, performed unnecessary procedures on healthy teeth which damaged them, and failed to correct problems with teeth that needed repair. After having the dental work performed, the woman experienced pain, bleeding gums, difficulty eating, and even teeth coming loose and falling out. To correct the damage which was caused by the dentist, she has had to have some teeth extracted, and the crowns had to be replaced.
